The haunted house
I stopped to take a photo of this building and its upper window without knowing the story.
In her book, “Glam Italia: 101 Fabulous Things to Do in Florence,” Corinna Cooke writes that the last window on the right on the top floor of this palazzo, which is located in the Piazza Della SS Annunziata, has been open for centuries.
The story goes that a bride was waiting for her newlywed husband to return from war, watching from this window in Palazzo Grifoni, never giving up hope for her entire life.
When the family later tried to close the window, things started happening. Shaking furniture, books and paintings flying, and so on. So the window has stayed open.
However… the photo I took shows the lefthand window open. The right is closed, unless the shutters count? I think not.
Interestingly, the “live’ version of one of the building photos I shot shows lights on the ground floor flickering. So… maybe… someone needs to open a different window.
Later, I wondered if the correct window was around the side of the building, which shows an open window on the right on the top floor.
Another account says it’s a window on the second floor (which would be third floor in Europe).
Whatever the case, it’s a great gothic ghost story.
Also, there is a hotel in the building, so you can stay there. If you dare.
Below: A nighttime photo seems to add to the spookiness. Either my phone is picking up reflections from the streetlights, or there’s some serious orb activity happening here.
